Volunteer Opportunities

SSCS is built on the strength of its members and their volunteer efforts. SSCS programs require member involvement to facilitate, plan and execute projects. As a volunteer for the Society, you will play a key role in the future of SSCS.

Education

Opportunity Name: Design Contest Program Designer

  • Responsibilities: Help in the design/evaluation of the design contest questions
  • Estimated Time Commitment: 30 hours total (two years)
  • Is the Opportunity Open-Ended, Does it have a start/end date? This opportunity has a two year commitment (two rounds of the contest). This allows an overlap and guaranteed continuity with the design contest program.
  • Additional Information: The design contest program is crucial to engage young professionals. Volunteers can help better define the content to attract more peers.

Opportunity Name: SSCS Arduino Contest Volunteer

  • Responsibilities: Advertising the competition to local high schools and universities/colleges, ranking the submissions as they arrive, and brainstorming ideas to improve future competitions

Conferences

Opportunity Name: Conference Performance Metric Analysis

  • Responsibilities: Work with society management team and conferences to track conference performance indicators and perform trend analysis. Work with conferences to review and maintain trend analysis.
  • Estimated Time Commitment: Less than an hour per week
  • Is this Opportunity Open-Ended, Does it have a start-end date? This opportunity does not have a start-end date, and help will help with conference development
  • Additional Information: Will use excel style data tables and email for gathering data from conferences

Publications

Opportunity Name: Readership Survey

  • Responsibilities: Design a survey targeted at young readers (what kind of articles do they find useful, format etc.), process the results, present data etc.
  • Estimated Time Commitment: Less than an hour per week

Women in Circuits

Opportunity Name: VLSI Symposium Women in Circuits Event Committee

  • Responsibilities: Lead/Work with a committee to host an event promoting diversity as part of the VLSI symposium
  • Estimated Time Commitment: 1hr, bi-weekly 6 months. A new committee forms every year.

Young Professionals

Opportunity Name: Virtual Mentoring Platform Volunteer (Chronus)

  • Responsibilities: Manage the Virtual Mentoring Platform, Attend quarterly meetings with mentoring platform administrators, Help with the advertisement of the mentoring platform, provide YP chair with stats, brainstorm on how to grow the platform.
  • Estimated Time Commitment: An hour per week
  • Is the Opportunity Open-Ended, Does it have a start-end date? This opportunity does not have a start-end date, and help will be needed as long as the platform is live.
  • Additional Information: This platform is fairly new, growing very quickly, and we want to help it grow further. There is also a lot of room for improvement and experimenting. We also need help marketing, i.e. spreading the word.
  • Qualifications Required: No prior volunteer experience is required. We prefer ECE graduates within +15 years of their graduations (i.e. Young Professional volunteers). Willingness to work within a team and a passion for serving the community.
  • Qualifications will be Gained: The volunteer will be a part of SSCS Young Professionals Committee. With this role you are expected to improve organizational and communications skills, make connections, and get the satisfaction of giving back to the community and making a difference for our younger members all over the world!

Opportunity Name: Webinars for Young Excellence Volunteer

  • Responsibilities: Be part of the organizing committee that meets and organizes webinars quarterly, communicate with the presenters, help with the webinar run (during Q&A or as a moderator). provide the YP chair with stats, brainstorm on the upcoming topics & presenters.
  • Estimated Time Commitment: On average less than an hour per week
  • Is the Opportunity Open-Ended, Does it have a start-end date? This opportunity does not have a start-end date, and help will be needed for each webinar.
  • Additional Information: WYE is free and open to all. A great way to introduce IEEE SSCS to the general ECE population. Webinars for Young Excellence already has a great group or organizers, we are looking for more help to sustain the workload and train new volunteers within this nice project.
  • Qualifications Required: No prior volunteer experience is required. We prefer ECE graduates within +15 years of their graduations (i.e. Young Professional volunteers). Willingness to work within a team and a passion for serving the community.
  • Qualifications will be Gained: The volunteer will be a part of SSCS Young Professionals Committee. With this role you are expected to improve organizational and communications skills, make connections, and get the satisfaction of giving back to the community and introducing SSSC to the general ECE population!

Opportunity Name: Mentoring Sessions (in sponsored SSCS conferences such as ISSCC, CICC, VLSI, ESSCIRC/ESSDERC, and A-SSCC)

  • Responsibilities: Be part of the volunteers that meet and organize online mentoring sessions. Communicate with the mentors, help with the marketing & advertising of the event, work with the collaborating groups & societies, help with the session run. provide the YP chair with stats, brainstorm on the upcoming event formats & topics.
  • Estimated Time Commitment: On average less than an hour per week
  • Is the Opportunity Open-Ended, Does it have a start-end date? This opportunity does not have a start-end date, and help will be needed for each mentoring session. It is also possible to volunteer only for a specific conference event (only for CICC or A-SSCC for example).
  • Additional Information: We collaborate with Women in Circuits, Electron Devices Society, local student groups and local chapters for these events. It is a great opportunity to form lasting connections and make an impact for our younger members.
  • Qualifications Required: No prior volunteer experience is required. We prefer ECE graduates within +15 years of their graduations (i.e. Young Professional volunteers). Willingness to work within a team and a passion for serving the community.
  • Qualifications will be Gained: The volunteer will be a part of SSCS Young Professionals Committee. With this role you are expected to improve organizational and communications skills, make connections, and get the satisfaction of giving back to the community and making a difference for our younger members all over the world.

Technical Committee for Open-Source Ecosystem

Opportunity Name: SSCS Open-Source Design Contest Judge/Mentor

  • Responsibilities: Attend weekly online meet-ups with contestants, provide technical guidance during meet-ups and via the contest’s Slack channel, help select teams for final tape-out round.
  • Estimated Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per week
