Established in 2026, the IEEE Journal on Exploratory Solid-State Computational Devices and Circuits (JxCDC) Best Paper Award recognizes the best paper published in the journal each calendar year. It honors work that advances the field through impact, technical excellence, novelty, and clarity, reflecting the multidisciplinary scope spanning devices, circuits, magnetics, and design automation.
The award is sponsored by five IEEE organizational units:
- Solid-State Circuits Society
- Electron Devices Society
- Magnetics Society
- Circuits and Systems Society
- Council on Electronic Design Automation
Award Description
This annual award recognizes the best paper published in the IEEE Journal on Exploratory Solid-State Computational Devices and Circuits during the previous calendar year. The winning paper is selected through a structured nomination and ranked-voting process led by the Journal’s editorial leadership.
Administration
The award is administered by the JxCDC Steering Committee, composed of representatives from the Solid-State Circuits Society, Electron Devices Society, Magnetics Society, Circuits and Systems Society, and the Council on Electronic Design Automation.
Prize
- Single annual award, with multiple recipients permitted
- US$300 per co-author, up to a maximum total of US$3,000
- Where the number of co-authors exceeds the maximum, the total prize is divided equally among all co-authors
- Each recipient also receives an official certificate
Funding
The award is funded through the JxCDC publication operational budget. The Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) backs up any remaining funding shortfall required to support the award. No travel allowance is provided for recipients to receive the award.
Eligibility
- Authors of papers published in JxCDC during the previous calendar year
- Self-nominations are not permitted
- Nominations within the same institution are not permitted
- Previous award winners are not eligible for substantially the same achievement (per IEEE Policy 4.4)
- Eligibility and selection comply with IEEE and Society/Council governing documents, including IEEE Policy 4.4 on Awards Limitations
Nomination Process
Nominations are solicited from the Journal’s editorial community rather than through open public submission. They are gathered from:
- Associate Editors and Guest Editors who handled papers published in the award year
- Peer reviewers, who may nominate a paper during the review process by indicating it for the Best Paper Award
Citation counts and IEEE Xplore page-view data are provided to editors to support nomination decisions. A brief supporting statement (a few sentences) is required for each nomination, and at least two new nominations are submitted each year.
Multiple nominations of the same paper are permitted and serve as further evidence of the strength of the paper’s case. Once the set of nominees is received, the final published papers are distributed to the selection committee for evaluation.
Selection Committee
The selection committee is appointed by the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) and consists of:
- The two most recent JxCDC Editors-in-Chief (serving up to five years, reflecting the three-year EiC term that may be extended to a maximum of five)
- Six current members of the editorial board, chosen to cover the breadth of topics the Journal publishes, with a mix of industry and academic members
- The current EiC, who serves as the non-voting chair and votes only to break ties
The six Associate Editors are selected each year based on editorial-board turnover and topic coverage, balancing continuity with renewal. A quorum is reached with more than 50% of the voting members.
Voting Method
The committee works individually; it does not meet in person or virtually, and votes are collected by email by the EiC. Each committee member selects a top-three set of papers from the nominee list:
- 1st-place vote = 3 points
- 2nd-place vote = 2 points
- 3rd-place vote = 1 point
The paper with the highest total score is the recipient; ties are broken by the EiC. All members must enter their votes before the final decision is made. The EiC tabulates the votes and informs IEEE of the winning paper following final approval from the SSCS Vice President of Publications.
Voting is conducted in accordance with Robert’s Rules of Order. Conflict-of-interest concerns are disclosed and addressed per IEEE Policies 9.9 A, B, and C; anyone with a conflict of interest recuses themselves from nominating, endorsing, discussing, and evaluating.
Schedule
- September 1 – October 1: Nomination period for papers published in the preceding year
- October 1 – November 30: Selection committee reviews nominees and selects a winner, as tabulated by the EiC
- December: Winners notified
- Following year: Award presented at a sponsor society’s premier conference

The selection committee evaluates papers on:
- Impact on the field as described in the scope of the Journal — both to date and the potential for future impact
- Technical excellence
- Novelty
- Clarity of writing
