Abstract: With datacenters mushrooming around each other to provide the necessary bandwidth for our computing and communication needs, the need to interconnect them with optical fibers at low cost and high energy efficiency has significantly increased. Coherent silicon photonic links bear the promise to satisfy that demand at an unprecedented scale, integration, and (low) cost. In this talk, I will briefly introduce coherent silicon photonics, draw parallels to wireless radio transceivers, describe the photonics and electronics details of 16-QAM coherent links operating at 0.5Tb/s, and comment on some of the subsequent research opportunities in bringing coherent links inside the datacenters.

Biography: Sudip Shekhar received his B.Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Washington, Seattle.

From 2008 to 2013, he was with the Circuits Research Laboratory, Intel Corporation, Hillsboro, OR, USA, where he worked on high-speed I/O architectures. He is now an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering with The University of British Columbia, Vancouver. His current research interests include circuits for electrical and optical interfaces, frequency synthesizers, and wireless transceivers.

Dr. Shekhar was a recipient of the $2.5M Schmidt Science Polymath Award in 2022, the Killam Teaching Prize at UBC in 2022, the Young Alumni Achiever Award by IIT Kharagpur in 2019, the IEEE Circuit and Systems Darlington Best Paper Award in 2010 and the IEEE RFIC Symposium Student Paper Award in 2015. He serves on the technical program committee of ISSCC, and served as a Distinguished Lecturer of SSCS (2021-22).
