The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society
Predoctoral Achievement Award for 2012-2013
In 2011 the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society replaced its traditional Predoctoral Fellowship with a new program called the Predoctoral Achievement Award. Â
In the former program we provided money to the student’s Professor to be used for tuition support, but have found that this was generally not needed. In the new program we will provide a $1000 honorarium to the student, and also cover the cost of the student’s attendance at ISSCC (travel, registration fee and hotel, subject to certain limits).
Four awards were funded for the academic year 2011-2012, and we anticipate a comparable number for 2012-2013. The criteria for selection will be essentially unchanged, with the addition of striving for geographical diversity if possible in light of the main criteria. The application period will begin on September 1, 2012 and end on October 15, 2012. Winners will be announced by November 30, 2012.
Â
Prerequisites
Applicants must have completed at least one year of graduate study, be in a Ph.D. program in the area of solid-state circuits,  and be members of IEEE and the Solid State Circuits Society. The awards will be made on the basis of academic record and promise, quality of publications, and a graduate study program well matched to the charter of SSCS.
Â
Application Note: All documents should be delivered electronically. There is no application form.Â
- Biography (1 page) including IEEE member number and contact information.
- A copy of all relevant undergraduate and graduate transcripts
- Essay on graduate study plans (about 2 pages)
o  Summarize what you have completed and what is planned.
o  List authored and co-authored publications and include a copy of each.
o  Describe work that must be done to complete your graduate program of study -- explain its importance and what is novel about its approach.
- Letters of Recommendation: At least two letters, one from the principal advisor, addressing academic record, accomplishments, and promise, and graduate research program.
It is best for students to collect all application documents into a single, complete package and submit it via email to sscs@ieee.org. Each file in the application may be attached individually or within a zip file collection. Recommendations may be incorporated into this package or emailed directly to sscs@ieee.org. In the latter case, each applicant should follow-up to make sure his or her references are submitted on time.
